Public Art Project Planned for NY Harbor

Mayor Bloomberg and Public Art Fund have announced a major public art project, aptly called The New York City Waterfalls, to be installed in New York Harbor this summer. The installation will consist of four monumental waterfalls, 90 to 120 foot tall, set offshore. The work is designed by artist Olafur Eliasson, “an internationally acclaimed artist who stretches the limits of public art and the forms it might take.” All four waterfalls will be sited within New York Harbor and there will be several viewing opportunities along the Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfronts, including the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. The installations have been designed to be sensitive to the environment, i.e. water quality and aquatic life, and will run on “green power.” They will operate seven days a week from mid-July through October,2008, from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, and will be lit after sunset. The waterfalls are expected to attract thousands of tourists to New York
City and, if they are as spectacular as the photo suggests, we can look
forward to lots of visitors coming to the Heights to view this new (albeit
temporary) addition to our matchless waterfront. For more information,
