Brooklyn Heights Branch Library - A Bustling but Quiet Place

It’s not hard to guess where the stroller brigade is headed on a Wednesday morning in the Heights. Just follow the parade to our super busy Brooklyn Heights Branch Library, one of the 60 branches of our $110,000,000 Brooklyn Public Library system. And one of its busiest.

Libraries are not just for picking out books anymore. According to Diana Prizeman, who heads the Friends of the Library, there are reading groups for toddlers, chess clubs for anyone, book sales once a week, auditorium concerts, arts and crafts sessions and computers for Googling and other learning experiences.

In fact, because of its strategic location and dual personality as both circulating and business library, its “customers,” as Edward Robinson-El, Supervising Librarian since 2002, fondly refers to them, are uniquely diverse. There are users not just from the Heights, but also parents and children from other neighborhoods, too. There are babies, toddlers, public and private school children, municipal, state and federal employees, eager entrepreneurs and retired seniors, perhaps the largest single group.

Such a load might be a totally daunting challenge for the library, but even with its no frills budgeting, it does the job, thanks to the help of the 350-member Friends group. With the group’s financial assist, our library is able to provide those many extras that give it a special degree of relevance to the lives of all the customers.

Friends’ newest project focuses on a proposal to provide a Teen-Friendly facility. If you would like to pitch in on this or any other of its projects, just call Diana at 718-624-0386 for information about how you can help.

It is worth noting that registering at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org will gain easy access to reserving books at our Branch as well as an incredible universe of vital information, so step up to help and use our wonder-filled library.
